School athletics are naturally going to help students develop healthy physical habits, as all of our programs are physically intensive. By choosing to play a physical sport like soccer, boys and girls are able to maintain healthy eating habits, and often learn how to prepare their own healthy meals as a result.
The Vanguard School Fall Sports oversees cross country running, soccer, tennis, and volleyball.
Through this experience, students are able to develop courage as they take risks, strength while displaying finesse, competitive intensity while exhibiting generosity of spirit, and mental as well as physical endurance. While the focus is to facilitate the development of each student’s athletic potential, the greater hope is to instill motivation to continue lifelong physical activity.
Cross Country running is a sport in which teams and individuals run a race on open-air courses over natural terrain such as dirt or grass. The majority of scholastic activities focus on the mind, but physical fitness also plays a role in shaping exceptional citizens. In fact, a sound mind and an active body can create synergy with one another. Aerobic activity promotes a more robust state of mind, so high schoolers stand to gain perspective with every stride.
A high school cross country course is about three (3) miles. To complete their races effectively, these runners must know how to gauge themselves and use their energy wisely. That kind of endurance training instills perseverance in young athletes. Additionally, high school running programs develop great fitness habits for later in life. Cross country training empowers high school students to go the distance—both on and off the trail.

When teenagers participate in soccer, they grow as individuals and as a team. They learn to collaborate, combining intellect for the sake of a shared objective. They hone their ability to think on their feet and form tactics. The sport contributes to the traits they will have as adults. Soccer games involve both displays of physical skill and exhibitions of character. More specifically, high school boys’ soccer prepares young men for obstacles beyond the borders of the field. The student athletes at Vanguard do not train merely for the next game; they train to better themselves as competitors and as citizens.
